Good luck–that’s a tough situation (we had a similar situation with a horse we bought for the camp I worked for, but since he was just going to be a camp horse we didn’t really care if we had his papers). If you have any information–a number, his registered name, sire/dam, etc., you can try to contact the association he is registered with. Your best bet is to get the former owner to give you whatever information he/she can, but it doesn’t seem like you’ve had much luck with that.

You will have to get a signed transfer from the previous owner, stating they are selling the horse to you with papers, and complete with the horse’s full registered name. The owner will also need to state that the papers are lost, so that you can apply for replacement papers when you send the transfer into the POA organization.

Truthfully, I wish I had a dime for every time someone selling a horse said, “He’s registered… now where are those papers…”…. I’ll send them on later.” Probably the horse has no papers, never did, and the seller won’t be seen again. I hope I’m wrong though, it’s always sad when a horse gets sold that way.
