Do you think this is a honest ebay seller?
Auction
I made an offer for $1,000 to an Ebay seller on an item that was sold in 2 prior auctions at $850. The guy has the item in his ebay store for sale at $1,700. Because the auctions ended both times at under $900, I figure that’s the market value and my offer is fairly reasonable. But the guy came back saying that he cannot sell for under $1,650. I am a bit disappointed that he refused to negotiate knowing the low prices he got but fair enough, I know he has every right to get as much as he can but what turned me off was that I discovered he as an on-line store where he listed the item at $1,500. Do you think this will turn you off and you deal with this guy?
I realize that the seller can insist on the price if he truly believes that is how much the item is worth but what turned me off was there was a “make offer” option on his auction listing but then he refused to lower his price by more than $50? Why encourage someone to make an offer when you don’t plan to negotiate for even a 5% reduction??

I have dealt with sellers like that before. He is holding out for the big sale and in his rejection of your offer, might have lost out completely considering the fact the other items only sold for under $900. I would not deal with him any longer. As much as he does have the right to hold out for the highest offer, he is way overpriced in his item if others did not sell for over $1000. He should have met you half-way at least and came back with something like $1250. It would have been a more legitimate counter offer and you actually might have opted to pay. Don’t go back to that seller unless he lowers his price. Another word of advice: Look at his feedback score. If he is under 98% positive, move on. That means he has been problematic before. I am 99.9% positive in my feedback and always try to work with the buyer so we can meet mutually in the middle.
Good luck!
I see nothing at all dishonest in what he’s doing. He’s asking for a price that he thinks he may be able to get. You didn’t want to pay more than $1000, while he obviously thinks he’ll somehow be able to get either $1700 or $1500. Fine. You two have differing opinions about the items’ value. That’s not dishonest.
How’s the sellers feedback rating? Yes that would tick me off just a bit…Call him on it and see what happens if you’re really interested in pursuing the item and having difficulty finding it elsewhere. Otherwise I’d look for it elsewhere. PEACE!
